What Type of Solar panels should I install? Polyrystalline or Monocrystalline?

The main Solar panels types are Polycrystalline and Monocrystalline. There are other types that vary from these two, like film and bifacial solar panels, but the majority of homes and projects do have these two.
Although one is slightly more efficient than the first one both work great if designed properly. The main difference is that monocrystalline solar panels are built with premium solar panel material cut from a single sheet of solar panels. Whatever is left is then glued and processed into poly crystalline solar panels.
You should not worry about which one to get, you should worry about getting a solar production warranty from your installer. Call us and ask us for one!

So, you are looking for a solar company because your bills are sky high.
Suddenly , after your first google search , you will get spammed by several companies in your facebook, Instagram, twitter and google accounts and searches.

Who should you choose?

It may seem simple to go with the big companies, but that would actually be your first mistake. Bigger companies are looking to probably lease your roof and reap all the benefits for themselves. They wont analyze your home. They will suggest as many panels as they can fit in your roof. You should choose the most reliable company, who is not necessary the smaller one.

How to separate good companies from bad?

Usually a bad company wont have any engineering degrees behind the projects. They will send you sales guys that will suggest to cover your entire roof with solar panels. This is not necessary the best option for you. They wont even have a physical office near you to go and visit them. Since their main office is far away or out of state, you should probably look for a local installer.
Another bad sign is their inability to install in less than a month. A long cue is usually their excuse, but what is really going on is that they are hiring another company and looking to sell at least 5 more systems in your area to make a profit after they hire a local installer.

How a proper net-meterig works.

In a regular 1-1 Net metering system, a good electric provider will recognize the opportunity to buy electricity from customers who produce solar power at the same price they are buying.

In my opinion, a good company recognizes the opportunity to sell, at the same rate, to the customers that are close to the solar plant, without incurring in electric loses.

In a not-so-good example of a good solar supportive electric utility company, you may find a non 1 to 1 buy rate. In South Texas we only have two electric companies with such policies. One is a Public owned utility that purchases at  F&PE (Fuel & Purchased Energy charge). The other is a cooperative that buys at 60% the electric rate they have.
In such cases we recommend the use of batteries or storage units.

A supportive electric provider will buy at the same rate , up to the point of usage, thus eliminating the use of batteries.

a)Any Solar Company with more than 5 Years has our respect.

Lets face it. You are not buying a television or a camera. You are entering into a 20 year relation with an installer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 50 percent of businesses make it past five years in operation. This is critical. In South Texas, we have seen 17 companies close their doors and do terrible damages to the industry. Everything from installing panels to north, east and west , to just leave installations undone or not knowing the Utility Company policies.

b)Local Installer and number of Engineers behind the project.

Who is making the sale? What are his credentials? Is an actual Electrical Engineer Degree visiting your house to see where the panels are going to be installed?
90% of the companies will fail these questions. They want to sell as many panels as possible, pointing to east , west and north (Yes, shame on those who install panels without informing the customer its production).
Scammers are easy to spot. When the company says they will install somewhere between now and six months, you are dealing with a company that is a front and maybe even out of state. Look for a Corporation, not for an LLC. Liability is everything in a company that will offer 25 years of warranty. Ask the Installer to show you his driver license. Where is he from?

While microinverter companies still claim to have a better solution than string inverters, the USA is still one of the few countries that use them.
Kaco pulled out of the US market , knowing microinverters are not a good solution for rapid shutdown and power control. And believe me, Germans are practical.
While SMA (yes another German company) still prefers to add a Rapid Shut down system rather than to place any electronic equipment in the worst place possible, behind a solar panel.
In theory they remain loyal to their claim: You can monitor each single panel production by website. And its true! But a good installer knows better than install panels pointing west, east and north or doing installs that just wont work.
Sure, all companies will replace the microinverters that fail (which I have seen failure rates on the field of up to 30% in less than 5 years of usage). But they don’t disclose that the installer will charge to replace the inverter. And that’s is coming from the end user pocket.
Lets face it. The technology is still not there.
But hey, we still believe it will be there one day . And we support research.
We offer our customers no charge to replace a microinverter . BUT notice we wont recommend a microinverter system when a string inverter system can be used.
Interested in installing micro inverters? Do your homework and research how many countries besides the USA use them. You will see the impractical defeats any good theories.
I am all up for protecting our firefighters, but there are better methods of disconnecting solar arrays than micro inverters. And as for monitoring, in our company we offer guarantee of production. We dont let the customer worry about which panel produces and which one wont. Thats our job!.
