Solar Panels Incentives and Benefits in the Rio Grande Valley (McAllen, Harlingen, Brownsville)

Alex Peña

Currently there are many incentives to install Solar Panels in the Rio Grande Valley. The biggest incentive still is the 30% federal tax Rebate or incentive coming from the taxes that the individual or corporation pay every year or quarter.
Some utility companies are giving incentives to install both solar and wind technologies to reduce or eliminate your electric bill.  The following is a guide to take advantages of these incentives. I hope this is guide is helpful.

Which company should you choose?  What kind of rebates should you be pursuing?

a)First off, choose the right company to do the job.
A good company will have more than 7 years installing solar panels or wind turbines. By Law, such companies have to offer a 5 year warranty on all the systems they install. An industry standard is 20 years. For example our company, Mardel Souza/American Made Solar and Wind offers 25 years of warranty in the turn key solar panel array.

b)Another good sign is that the company has local offices. Meaning, if something is not right, you can actually visit them at the location nearest to you. I have seen many companies from California, and other states outside from Texas, sell systems in Texas for outrageous (I would even dare say criminal) prices , and people still pay for them. Incredibly enough people will pay 3-5 times more to these companies for the same system that can be purchase by a local company.  These companies will in turn hire a local company, usually a master electrician, to do the job. This Master electrician is not certified and has probably no idea how to properly install the panels.  Keep reading and I will describe how to identify the most common mistakes.
American Made Solar and Wind does not install for any of these companies.
Before committing to any of these companies, do your research and find a local company. By local, I don’t mean a local sales office. Look for their actual warehouse and installation facility. Anything within 80 miles is good. Check with your city building department if this company does regular business and installations within the area.

c) How many Electrical Engineers does the company has. The solar industry moves very fast. This means that the components change . Inverters and solar panels need to work in synchronous order to generate the best for you.  This means an Electrical Engineering degree would be the best bet to have the best components working for you. Sure, there are solar simulators that can give you that, but simulators do not adjust 100% to all conditions and they are useless in the hands of a non-engineering degree (my opinion).

d) Has the company done any commercial , industrial or government jobs? A good company has done and performed contracts with the government , therefore you know the company is reliable.

How to know they are quoting you the right equipment for you?
