The practicality that single-use plastics has in our life is undeniable; plastic bottles, plastic bags or coffee cups are for daily use for most of us. But we produce roughly 300 million tons of plastic each year and half of it is disposable! That’s why it’s important that, as a society, we promote eco-friendly alternatives, social awareness and public pressure.
We can also promote voluntary individual reduction strategies like the adoption of reusable bags, carry a reusable cup for hot beverages or avoid the use of plastic straws. In Canada reusable bags have been widely embraced and often offered free of charge as a promotional item by various organizations.
We can make other changes in our consumption that reduce the single-use plastics such as purifying your own water, instead of buying bottled water, or skip the plastic wrap to store your leftovers. As for hygiene, you can use bar soap instead of bottled soap.
